Knysna South Africa Safaris

SOUTH AFRICAN SAFARIS AND KNYSNA

Knysna is one of the most famous towns that make up part of the Garden Route; a route that takes you from the Western Cape along a scenic adventure towards the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Knysna has become a popular tourist destination and a favourite family holiday area in the recent years. It is located between George and Plettenberg Bay and is believed to have derived its name from the Knysna River that flows through this stunning coastal area.

Knysna (town) is thought to have developed in 1796 when George Rex landed in the Cape. He was extremely influential in the development of Knysna as a port for sheltering ships; in 1954 the port was closed.

Knysna is most famously known for its warm-water estuary that passes through 2 large headlands known as ‘The Heads’. ‘The Heads’ boasts a breath-taking look-out point which allows travellers the optimal vantage point of the open ocean… There is also a path that you can follow that takes you directly out onto one of the headlands as well as restaurants that offer stunning views and amazing food.

The town was built on the northern-shore of the Knysna river estuary and north of this area is a temperate rainforest that connects to the popular Outeniqua Mountains… The Knysna forest boasts an impressive selection of ancient trees – stinkwood, yellowwood, blackwood and cape chestnut – and an interesting selection of animals including a variety of birds, small antelope and even the famous Knysna Elephant/s (the number of these unusual elephants is unknown).

The nearest beach to Knysna is Brenton-on-Sea which has become a very popular surf spot for the adventurous surfers. There is also the Millwood gold mine which was developed in 1885 when alluvial gold was found there. Nowadays the old mine is a picnic area offering interesting nature walks and swimming areas. Knysna is also home to Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and a snake-park for the animal lovers.

Knysna also boasts many other fantastic activities, such as; hiking, horse riding, canoeing, riding, yachting, fishing, paragliding and scuba diving. If you would like a more relaxed holiday in Knysna you can always enjoy a day at one of the world-class spas or spend some time at one of the famous golf courses.

Knysna boasts a Mediterranean Maritime Climate with hot summers and mild/chilly winters. Knysna is one of those lucky areas that you can visit anytime of the year. Summer would be the best season to visit in – hot and humid… but sometimes too busy with tourists.

There are also other South African attractions beneath that you might want to visit on your South African Safari.
