SOUTH AFRICAN SAFARIS AND THE MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

The Madikwe Game Reserve is situated in the North West Province, South Africa. The Madikwe area is one of the few regions in South Africa to boast the Big 5 safari experience in a ‘malaria free’ zone! This South African Game Reserve extends all the way from the North West Province to Botswana, just reaching the Botswana border. The Madikwe Game Reserve covers a massive 750 km2, providing ample ground for an amazing South African safari.

The Madikwe Game Reserve hosts many safari animals, including; lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos as well as countless different species of antelope and 350 different types of birds. It is located in a unique position; on the transitional zone between South Africa and the Kalahari… many animals found in the Kalahari region can also be found in the Madikwe Game Reserve.

An interesting feature of the Madikwe Game Reserve is that it is one of the only areas in Africa where the springbok and the Kalahari gemsbok meet naturally; normally they both prefer to reside in completely different habitats.

The Madikwe Game Reserve offers guided walks, night game drives as well as fantastic and informative safaris. Madikwe was opened in 1991 (before this it was unproductive farming land) as a community upliftment project, to economically uplift the Madikwe region. Madikwe has 30 lodges within its boundaries; these lodges provide comfortable accommodation for safari travellers. There are also Madikwe community lodges; these lodges are run by locals and all of the profit goes directly towards the upliftment of this region.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is the 5th largest game reserve in South Africa and covers 680 km2, but with the inclusion of some private land it now makes up a massive area of 750 km2! The Madikwe Game Reserve comprises of open grasslands, bushveld plains as well as rocky outcrops. The climate ranges from mild to hot with very cold winter nights…
